It is the air which we breathe that fills our lungs and gives us life and light. It is that which refreshes us if pure, or sinks us into stagnation if it be foul. Let me for awhile inhale the breath of an invigorating literature. Sit down, Mr. Mackinnon; I have a question that I must put to you. And then she succeeded in carrying him off into a corner. As far as I could see he went willingly enough at that time.

I love these stories, but I am 71 years old. There may not be enough action for today's children. However, I made Raggedy Ann dolls for my grandchildren and gave them the books so they would know the doll's true personality. The rag dolls are great; their joints allow them to sit in little chairs at tea-parties. We've had great fun.
My oldest granddaughter chose the fabric for her Raggedy Ann's clothing, a lavender flowered dress and a pink apron with large ladybugs. I'm used to it now. She also chose a brown yarn for the hair and wanted it a bit longer than is normal. I liked that because the original Raggedy Ann did not have orange hair. If another granddaughter wants orange hair -- or green -- I will agree. And I'll get used to that too.

Raggedy Andy Stories edition by Johnny Gruelle Children eBooks Reviews
This product is not exactly as depicted. When you "LOOK INSIDE!", the drawings are in color. In fact, in the book, they are black and white and poorly copied. I am contemplating returning this book.
I loved this book growing up - the edition I had was originally my grandmother's, from the 30's or very early 40's - and one of my favorite parts of the book were the illustrations. This Christmas, I wanted to get the same book to give my niece to go with the Raggedy Ann doll I was giving her, and was thrilled to find that the book was still available with the same illustrations that I grew up with. Even the picture on the cover is the same. While my niece is still a little young to really enjoy the story at 15 months old, my sister says she loves looking at the pictures in the book with her doll.
This illustrated edition of Raggedy Ann Stories is wonderful to read on my tablet and phone. My original kindle does not give the pictures the color and quality that they deserve (My galaxy 10.1 and Droid Incredible do!) I love the story. Not that the plot is scintillating. It's a silly book of stories about a rag doll and her friends.
Hopefully most of you are familiar with Raggedy Ann so I don't have to explain it. My daughter is 5. She has recently begun to enjoy my reading these "chapter" books to her as a special treat. It's great because when we're in the car or camping I can read, it's backlit, there's a wonderful illustration every few pages. Nice. These are short self-contained stories.
So, for those of you in the modern world who do not want their children exposed to violence or unpleasantness. Skip any of the original Gruelle Raggedy Ann & Andy books. I think that the sheer wackiness outweighs the rest but be warned that there is "thumping" and other violent acts. My daughter doesn't even notice.
Generally I prefer the hard cover editions of these books, it seems a bit wrong to be reading such a classic in digital, but this one is nicely done and I'm glad I have it to take with us.
I was delighted when I saw this, but now having read it, I am somewhat disappointed. I was even a little disappointed when I saw what stories were in the book; I was hoping the book would be full of ALL the Raggedy Ann and Andy stories that I read and loved as a very little girl (such as Raggedy Ann and Andy - The rainy day circus, Raggedy Ann and Andy - The little grey kitten and Raggedy Ann and Andy - Five birthday parties in a row), but I feel that none of the stories in this book are really as good as the stories I mentioned. I WISH they'd bring all the aforementioned stories out on or iBooks
These were the stories my Dad read to me as a kid. They ought to be available to a new generation of children via all the major B&M bookstores. But as someone who once worked in a bookstore for five years in college back in the '90s, I observed even then that these works were never stocked. As a result, too few children are exposed to Johnny Gruelle's timeless classics. These are incredibly imaginative and whimsical stories, with illustrations completely unlike anything produced by anyone else (meaning much better than most children's illustrators/cartoonists' today). But more than that, these books convey values of kindliness, compassion and the Golden Rule. Every children's librarian should stock Gruelle's books and every major bookstore should carry at least some of of these classics. Back in the '70s and even into the mid '80s the dolls were ubiquitous. By the '90s, however, the dolls and the stories seemed to fall off the map. It would seem that because Disney never gained control of these classic characters, they have fallen out of the mainstream. That's a real shame and I wish the Gruelle estate/hometown would work harder to publicize these works to a new generation.
I read the entire set of Johnny Gruelle Raggedy Ann books to my children when they were young. Now it is time for my grandchildren to hear the magic of his stories. They are a wonderful way to share quality quiet time with the kids. I love the goodness and sharing each story teaches. This is a fantastic way to imagine the stories as they are read. My four year old grandson is glued to the story as I read aloud. I do explain what certain things mean as it is from a more innocent time with words we no longer use and things we don't have. But he listens closely and can tell me what went on the last time we read from the book. At four he can actively listen to two chapters before loosing interest. That's pretty good for a little kid. My daughter was the one who asked for the books. And wouldn't you know, I can't find them. The next best thing is an e-book. They have taken photos of the book with the illustrations included. Just enough pictures to satisfy a little kid. He loves using his imagination as I read. I love hearing
them again too. And I really enjoy the books being available on my phone or . Big Win all the way!
Don't buy this book if you like Raggedy Andy !
That is, don't buy the 2015 Milk Press edition.
It is a cheap imitation of the real Raggedy Andy book. To begin with, there are no pictures of any kind in the book.
The best you get are the captions of the pictures, and those are too small to read.
The text is also too small to read. Older people trying to read this to children would be straining their eyes.
And the children would become bored not being able to see the pictures.
This book is a gyp, and should be removed from sale by .
