Set in a remote valley, surrounded by mountains and obscured by fog, In the Smoky Air tells the story of Sean, an ordinary college student, and Allie, his beautiful, brilliant, and troubled girlfriend. About to celebrate their one-year anniversary, Sean unexpectedly meets a mysterious woman named Olivia who claims he will have to call her soon. "Don't worry," she assures him, "everything's going to be fine." Suddenly confronted with mystical experiences he cannot explain, Sean's relationship with Allie begins to unravel. But in the midst of it all, Sean's awareness also begins to expand and soon breaches the boundaries of what he ever believed possible. "Alok Joddha Hernández subtly nudges you out of reality into a liminal world so vivid you slowly realize you've been living there all along. In the Smoky Air is a meticulously crafted debut novel, richly layered and full of surprises, and Hernández is a new writer you must put on your watch list." -- Heinz Insu Fenkl, PEN/Hemingway Finalist, author of Memories of My Ghost Brother

In the continuing tradition of great literature, Alok Joddha Hernandez tells us a tale that is both relatable enough to hold our emotion and foreign enough to hold our interest. "In The Smoky Air" is the story of Sean, an uncomplicated everyman, struggling to find himself amongst a world and supporting cast with unknowable surreality. Ally, his fickle love interest who flutters through life physically, romantically and intellectually, attempts to guide him towards vision and self-realization. In the end however, it is Sean, removed from intellect and outside influence, who must discover for himself. In his debut novel, Hernandez is burdened with the task of defining his voice in the continuing conversation of modern literature. I believe that after reading this novel, you will agree that there truly is nobody like him writing today. His beautiful prose, lovable characters, and unspoiled vision of the human spirit will make you want to carry this book in your bag, long after you've finished it.Product details

In the Smoky Air Alok Joddha Hernandez 9781881717126 Books Reviews
Hernandez's elegant descriptions are among the best I have read depicting the Catskills and the surrounding towns. The awkward yet touching dialogue between the (arguably) "average" Sean and the emotionally-troubled Allie are painfully realistic, while the philosophical backdrop creates an eerie, surreal setting that blends effortlessly with the scenery. A great read if you're looking for a short novel with more substance than the run of the mill.
In The Smoky Air is more than any synopsis review can offer. Set in a world where a mountain or a house can be just as much a character as our protagonist, Hernandez takes us from a place where our feet are both safely on the ground to a place where we're floating upside down and then convinces us that we've always been there. In The Smoky Air exposes the danger of "reading" our own lives as though they are books and will leave you feeling exposed as a result. Hernandez will make you a better reader, and at the same time, wonder if that is a good thing.
Alok's writing is so elegant, it's more like poetry than prose. Oftentimes his turn of phrase made me stop and say, "Wow." What's also interesting about this book is it's intellectual but not intellectual. There are concepts sprinkled throughout the book that thinkers will love but the book is written in such a way they're easy to digest. This book definitely has layers because for those who don't want to contemplate philosophy they don't have to. The language is simple, compact, but it packs a punch.
